Bathroom Remodeling

One contractor for the whole bathroom

A bathroom remodel with The Home Doctors covers everything from tear-out to the last fixture: demolition, repairs to the floor and wall framing, plumbing and electrical, waterproofing, tile, the shower or tub, the vanity and the finish work. We pull the permits and book the inspections.

Most of the houses we work in are old enough to have surprises. About 72% of Marin homes and 75% of San Francisco homes were built before 1980 (US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024). The tile can look fine while the subfloor under the shower has been soaking up water for years.

Before and after

Drag to see the difference

How it works

The order we work in

  1. 01

    Tear-out

The old tile and fixtures come out, so we can see the framing and the plumbing.

  2. 02

    Repairs

Rotted subfloor, soft framing and failed pans get fixed while everything is open.

  3. 03

    Rough-in

New valves, drains and supply lines, plus outlets, lighting and the exhaust fan.

  4. 04

    Waterproofing

The shower pan and wet walls are sealed before any tile goes up.

  5. 05

    Tile and finish

Tile, glass, vanity, toilet, trim and paint, then the final inspection.

Every job is different

What your bathroom needs depends on the job

The floor is soft or the shower leaks

Start with the repair, not the tile catalog. A soft spot by the toilet or a stain on the ceiling below means water has been getting past the pan or the wax ring. We open it up, replace the rotted subfloor and pan, then decide how much of the room to redo.

You're staying in the house for the long run

Build the barrier-free pieces in now. Blocking for grab bars is a small addition while the walls are open, and a curbless shower is far easier during a remodel than after. The Glen Park bathroom is a good model.

It's a guest bath or a half bath

Keep the layout and spend on what people see and touch: vanity, mirror, lighting and floor tile. Our half bath in Larkspur and Pacific Heights guest bath were done this way.

Shower remodels and tub-to-shower conversions

A shower remodel can stay in the same footprint or replace an old tub with a walk-in shower. Either way the work starts at the pan and the valve wall, because that is where old showers fail.

In a Terra Linda shower remodel in San Rafael, the new shower has a tiled bench, a grab bar, a decorative tile band and a handheld shower you can reach from the bench. The Inner Richmond bathroom went the other way: it kept a tub, with a new valve wall and a floating vanity. A tub still matters in a house with small kids, and a walk-in shower matters more when getting in and out is the hard part.

Barrier-free and aging-in-place bathrooms

A barrier-free bathroom lets you roll or walk into the shower with no curb to step over. The usual pieces are a curbless shower floor sloped to a drain, grab bars set into blocking in the wall, a bench or fold-down seat, a handheld shower and enough clear floor space to turn around.

Our barrier-free bath remodel in Glen Park has a curbless shower with a linear drain and a wall-mounted wood bench. In an Oakland penthouse primary bath, we turned the room around and put a curbless shower at the far end. Planning this before you need it is far easier than retrofitting a bathroom in a hurry after a fall or a surgery.

FAQ

Questions people ask before a bathroom remodel

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Marin County?

It depends on the size of the room, whether the shower, tub or toilet moves, and what turns up under the old tile. We price your job after we see the bathroom. For a public reference point, the median declared value on 794 bathroom permits in unincorporated Marin from 2023 to September 2026 was $39,050, according to County of Marin building permit records. That is the value written on the permit application, not a final invoice.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A refresh that keeps the layout moves faster than a full gut, and a job where the floor or wall framing has rotted takes longer, because that repair has to happen before any waterproofing or tile. We can give you a schedule for your job once we have seen what it involves.

Do you handle the permits?

Yes. We pull the permits and book the inspections, so you aren’t the one chasing the city. Bathroom permits go through San Francisco, the County of Marin for unincorporated areas, or your own city or town, and we deal with whichever one your home falls under.

Do you remodel bathrooms in San Francisco?

Yes. Our bathroom projects include homes in Noe Valley, the Inner Richmond, Miraloma Park, Glen Park, West Portal, Parkside and Pacific Heights, as well as San Rafael, Terra Linda, Greenbrae, Mill Valley and Larkspur in Marin.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. The Home Doctors holds California contractor license #1154343 (B, General Building Contractor), and we are fully insured. You can check the license on the Contractors State License Board website.
